Beginner Back Handspring with Air Barrel

Purpose: This drill teached the athlete to stretch out the back handspring. Using the Air Barrel allows for self coaching as well as peer coaching.

Set up: Place a folded Tumbling mat down length wise (the 4' length is best) and on top of that we placed a folded Micro Ramp and Jr. Sweet Spot then the Air Barrel is placed on the top of the stack. For the starting position we had the gymnast start on the Jr. Sweet Spot and bounce forward to the Bungee Block then pushing backward for the Back Handspring. This movement allows the gymnast to get her feet in front of her, have to push back and feel safe that something is going to "catch" her.
